Purpose

Authors publish information for particular audiences. An article on steroids and athletes published in a newspaper or a magazine such as Sports Illustrated would contain very different information than an article on steroid use in a medical journal.

Consider using these questions to determine the purpose of an article, book, website, etc.:

  • Who is the intended audience? (researchers, students, general public, consumers, professionals, etc.)
  • Is the information at the level that you need or is it too technical, advanced or elementary?
  • Is the purpose to share scholarly information or to entertain or inform?
  • Is a product or service being sold?
  • What kind of information is being conveyed? It is an opinion piece, empirical research, a literature review, a summary, a news article?
