Creating a Search Query

Most databases don’t know how to interpret the natural language we speak. A search query is your research question or thesis written in an expression the database’s search engine can interpret in order to locate relevant results.

A search query is usually made up of:

  • Words or phrases representing the most important concepts of your topic
  • Search operators, which logically group concepts together

The search query may include:

  • Phrases
  • Boolean or logical operators
  • Truncation
  • Nesting
