Boolean or Logical Operators

Operators organize and group your keywords so that the database’s search engine matches the terms in the way that you intend. Called “Boolean” or “logical” operators, using “AND,” “OR,” and “NOT” create search equations that help the computer interpret how to look for the information you need.

Use the AND operator to include all of the keywords, and narrow search results

Example: sex and advertising

Use the OR operator to look either keyword, broadening search results

Example: teenager or adolescent

Use the NOT operator to completely eliminate things from your search results

Example: (florida panthers) not hockey
