Internet and Web Sites
Characteristics
The Internet is a network of many computer networks, including the World Wide Web (or Web), e-mail, chat, FTP servers, wikis, virtual reality spaces and other communication systems. Often people refer to the Internet as the Web, though strictly speaking, the Web is a subset.
Advantages
- Updated instantly providing moment-to-moment current event awareness
- Web site publishers are varied
- Information is available on a wide selection of topics
- Offers multi-media
- Easy to access and use
- Powerful marketing tool
- Provides forums for people to exchange information, such as bulletin boards, wikis, blogs, etc.
Disadvantages
- Not everything is on the Internet
- Content is unstable, can disappear or be altered quickly
- Quality control is an issue and authority, reliability and accuracy need to continually be evaluated
- Not everything is free
- Advertising and site sponsorship can lead to biased information
Finding Internet Sites
There are many approaches to finding websites and other information on the Internet.
Use these finding aids to find high quality documents and information:
- Subject guides created by UF library experts, such as the Libraries’ Subject Guides & Specialists or the Internet Reference Sources site
- Directories and “virtual libraries” such as the Librarian’s Internet Index, or the Internet Public Library
- Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Ask.com
- Scholarly search engines such as Intute and INFOMINE
