Magazines
Characteristics
Magazines are popular publications that strive to entertain and inform the general public.
Readers are not assumed to possess experience or specialized knowledge in the subject area. Examples include Time, Rolling Stone, Ebony and Sports Illustrated.
Advantages
- May provide easily readable accounts and summaries of scientific or other research
- Good source of current events and issues
- Includes numerous photographs and illustrations
- Authors explain subject jargon and specialized vocabulary
Disadvantages
- No scholarly analysis
- Often do not cite the source of information or include bibliographies
- Brief articles written by journalists and freelance authors
- Information is often second or third-hand.
- Focus on advertising and selling products or promoting a viewpoint
Finding Articles in Magazines
To locate articles in magazines, you will need to search in an online subscription database such as Academic Search Premier, or in a print index such as the Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature. These are available in the UF Libraries website and reference collections.
